When commercial and industrial customers need reliable backup power, they’re often facing unique challenges that require more than a standard solution. For Garrett Talbott, Sales Engineer at Duthie Power, that’s exactly what makes the job rewarding.

Over his 13 years with Duthie Power, Garrett has built a reputation for helping customers navigate the complexities of generator projects throughout Southern California, from Ventura County and the San Gabriel Valley to the Inland Empire. Along the way, he’s learned that no two projects are ever the same.

“Every job is a different job, and every person is different,” Garrett says. “It’s not cut and dry. There are always unique requirements, regulations, site conditions, and customer priorities that have to be considered.”

Learning Never Stops

One of the biggest lessons Garrett has learned throughout his career is the importance of continual education and adaptability.

Backup power projects often involve far more than simply installing a generator. Customers may need fuel polishing, specialty infrastructure, environmental compliance services, or support coordinating multiple contractors. Garrett works closely with Duthie’s network of trusted, vetted subcontractors to deliver comprehensive turnkey solutions.

“We have a can-do attitude,” he says. “Customers get comfortable working with us and often want to simplify things by working through a single vendor. Because of our experience and relationships, we’re able to coordinate all the moving pieces and help make that happen.”

That flexibility recently helped Duthie support a water district project involving a triple-rinse system. Even when the customer requested a preferred subcontractor, Garrett and the team worked collaboratively to ensure the project met the customer’s expectations.

Solving Complex Challenges

Garrett’s experience has taught him that successful generator installations require understanding a wide range of factors that vary from site to site.

California regulations, permitting requirements, and emissions standards can differ by jurisdiction. Air quality regulations may change based on a facility’s location, proximity to schools, or local enforcement priorities. Fuel standards continue to evolve, bringing new considerations related to biodiesel blends and generator performance.

Then there are the site-specific engineering challenges.

“We’re currently involved with a generator installation at a mountain location,” Garrett explains. “People may think a 30-kilowatt generator is always a 30-kilowatt generator, but that’s not necessarily true. At higher elevations, engines can become derated because they have to work harder. Those are the details that have to be accounted for to make sure the equipment performs when it’s needed.”

Staying ahead of these requirements is an ongoing commitment.

“Every January and July, regulations can change,” Garrett says. “You have to stay up to date on legislation, enforcement, and best practices. The learning is constant. I learn something new every day.”

Understanding What Matters Most to Customers

While the technical side of generator projects is important, Garrett believes the best solutions begin with understanding the customer’s goals.

Some organizations are focused on achieving the most cost-effective solution possible. Others prioritize maximum reliability, regulatory compliance, future growth, or a long-term service relationship. Garrett’s role is to identify those priorities and develop a solution that aligns with them.

“Some customers want affordability, others want reliability and a long-term relationship,” he says. “We make every effort to accommodate all requests.”

Even factors as simple as building layouts, electrical infrastructure, or access limitations can require creative thinking from the Duthie team.

“The wiring can be different from property to property, and some locations have constraints that force us to think creatively about how to get the job done,” Garrett says. “Our focus is always finding the right solution.”

The Duthie Difference

For Garrett, one of Duthie Power’s greatest strengths is the company culture behind every project.

“What I like most about Duthie is the family atmosphere,” he says. “Senior leadership is accessible, responsive, and willing to help solve problems for customers. It feels like a team. You’re not just a number in a large corporation.”

That collaborative environment extends from the sales team to operations, service, and quality assurance.

“When you bring something up, it doesn’t go on deaf ears,” Garrett says. “People are listening.”

He also points to Duthie’s dedicated quality assurance resources as an important differentiator.

“Having a QA manager helps build customer trust and sets us apart from competitors. We understand that this is emergency equipment and life-safety equipment. We don’t minimize customer concerns.”

A Partner Customers Can Count On

At the end of the day, Garrett believes backup power is about more than generators.

“Our job is to help keep people safe and help our customers keep people safe,” he says.

Whether a customer is dealing with budget constraints, permitting challenges, operational requirements, or long-term expansion plans, Garrett encourages them to start the conversation.

“We always ask, ‘What is needed to complete the job and deliver on our turnkey promise?'” he says. “Give us a chance to meet you where you’re at. Let us know your goals, your concerns, and your challenges, and we’ll work with you to get what you need.”

For customers across Ventura County, the San Gabriel Valley, and the Inland Empire, that commitment to expertise, adaptability, and service has made Garrett Talbott a trusted advisor for more than a decade.
